Pounding, Praying, Playing  by Dr Liam McNiffe.

"Retired teacher and principal of St Patrick's College, Cavan, Dr. Liam McNiffe has written what many of us thought about but never actually got around to, a factual account of his days in a no-frills boarding school. There is nothing sanitised and nothing sensationalised in this book. The details of sounds and smells, the confusion and uncertaintly, the small triumphs and disappointments of our youth and the setting of these against the background of the events of the time - it's all there!  It is an unusual and fascinating piece of writing, vividly recalling the early 1970s, fashion, music and the Northern troubles as they impinged on the life of the adolescent author.  It is an absorbing study of teenage life, a social history of a changing Ireland told with an engaging combination of humour, irony and sensitivity,  It is a very entertaining read."
